One of the greatest environmental impacts of a data centre is the building itself, especially if it is scratch built to purpose.
Digital Realty Trust has helped to develop the British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) for data centres. Similar standards exist for schools, residences and even prisons, but this is the first such certification for buildings.
The BREEAM standard can now be applied to any new data centre being built to ensure the full environment impact of the building is taken into account.

Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is one of the most widely adopted metrics for measuring a data centre’s performance. Digital Realty Trust now uses the metric to not only benchmark the performance of its data centre designs, but builds it right into the data centre so customers can react and improve performance during the life of the facility. By measuring the facility’s total power usage every 15 minutes, Digital Realty Trusts data centres now allow real-time monitoring of energy efficiency.
